Putting users on top of the learning curve
q30 is the agency of record for the OHA, which provides support to its 130 plus member hospitals throughout the province. A big part of what OHA does for its members is to offer over 250 continuing education opportunities through conferences, workshops, in-class, and digital learning to health care professionals affiliated with those institutions. The promotion of these revenue generating initiatives represents a significant portion of OHA’s revenue.

q30 was tasked with a complete redesign and build of the main OHA corporate website, of which the education site was a part. We determined that the two entities should be separated physically and visually to provide focus for two very different user goals.

The OHA has large internal committees that touch many different parts of the two sites, and who needed to be involved and informed at every step. To help with this, we facilitated three half-day collaborative workshops to create personas, user journey maps, and sitemap and navigation schemes with card-sorting exercises. This created immediate buy-in from all, as they got a chance to voice their opinion and affect direction.

We then produced wireframes demonstrating site and content structure, and moved quickly to visual concepts. We presented a variety of directions and together came to a consensus on which ones to develop further.

We designed an easy navigation with simple topic focused categories and quick access to all OHA websites.

The education site became a colourful, engaging, and content-rich storefront for the OHA’s educational products, programs, and services.

Content was reorganized, with suggested search implemented to help make things easier for users to find. In order to maximize experience, promote discovery and encourage cross-relational interests, surfacing was employed to present options which users may not have known existed.

Developing a coherent and manageable content strategy was key for the success of this project. The results of our workshops saw the elimination and/or simplification of the existing content. We were also able to clearly define content structure for the education details pages so that OHA staff had a solid and understandable template with which to work when writing new material. In order to reduce the need to enter course information in multiple locations and reduce employee time updating, content became dynamic wherever possible.
